Portulaca oleracea L., an annual herbaceous plant of the genus Portulaca in the family Portulacaceae, is glabrous throughout. Its stems lie flat or recline, spreading out, much - branched, cylindrical, light green or tinged with dark red. The leaves are alternate or nearly opposite, flat and fleshy, obovate, dark green on the upper surface, and light green or tinged with dark red on the lower surface. The petals are yellow and obovate; the sepals are green and helmet - shaped. The fruit is ovoid - globose. The seeds are small, obliquely globose, dark brown and lustrous.
