Butterbur extract is derived from the Petasites hybridus plant, a perennial shrub native to Europe, Asia, and North America. Traditionally used for centuries in herbal medicine, it is best known for its potential benefits in migraine prevention, allergy relief, and anti-inflammatory effects. However, due to the presence of toxic alkaloids (pyrrolizidine alkaloids, or PAs), only PA-free standardized extracts should be used.
